ASSESSMENT OF THE PERFORMANCE OF GOMBE STATE ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY IN SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT IN GOMBE METROPOLIS
Abstract
This study assesses the performance of the Gombe State Environmental Protection Agency
(GOSEPA) in solid waste management within Gombe metropolis. The research investigates
key areas such as waste collection efficiency, public awareness initiatives, and resource
adequacy, while also exploring the challenges faced by the agency. Data was collected through
questionnaires, interviews, and field observations, providing insights into community waste
disposal practices and the agency’s operational capacity. Findings reveal that GOSEPA
contributes significantly to waste management, but systemic issues like funding constraints,
inadequate infrastructure, and rapid urbanization hinder its effectiveness. The study highlights
the need for increased government support, public sensitization, and modernized waste
management systems to enhance environmental sustainability in Gombe metropolis.
