EFFECT OF ORGANIC AND INORGANIC FERTILIZER ON MAIZE GROWTH AND SOIL CHEMICAL PROPERTIES IN ANYIGBA, KOGI STATE.
Abstract
This study investigated the effect of organic and inorganic fertilizers on maize growth and soil chemical properties in Anyigba, Kogi State. The experiment was conducted using a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with treatments comprising poultry manure, NPK fertilizer, a combination of poultry manure and NPK fertilizer, and a control treatment without fertilizer application. Data were collected on plant height, number of leaves, stem girth, leaf area, and soil chemical properties including pH, organic carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Results indicated that combined application of organic and inorganic fertilizers significantly enhanced maize growth and improved soil fertility compared to sole applications and the control. The study concluded that integrated nutrient management offers a sustainable approach to increasing maize productivity while maintaining soil health. Recommendations include encouraging farmers to adopt combined fertilizer application strategies for improved crop performance and environmental sustainability
