INFLUENCE OF PRINCIPAL’S MANAGERIAL SKILLS ON TEACHER’S PRODUCTIVITY AND STUDENTS’ ACEDEMIC ACHIEVEMENT IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN ATIBA LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF OYO STATE
Abstract
This study examines the influence of principals' managerial skills on teachers' productivity
and students' academic achievement in secondary schools within Atiba Local Government
Area of Oyo State. The study employed a quantitative research design, utilizing a
structured questionnaire titled Principals' Managerial Skills on Teachers' Productivity
Questionnaire (PMSTPQ) to collect data from 150 teachers. The study assessed key
managerial skills, including innovative skills, conceptual skills, human relation skills, and
communication skills, in relation to teachers' productivity and students' academic
performance. Data analysis was conducted using the Statistical Package for the Social
Sciences (SPSS), and chi-square tests were employed to determine the significance of
relationships between principals' managerial skills and educational outcomes. The
findings revealed no significant relationship between principals’ managerial skills and
teachers' productivity, students' academic achievement, or school effectiveness. This
suggests that while principals' leadership and management styles are important, other
factors such as teacher motivation, instructional strategies, student engagement, and
school resources play more critical roles in shaping academic outcomes. The study
concludes that principals’ managerial skills alone may not be sufficient to enhance
teachers’ productivity or student success. It recommends that school administrators
undergo capacity-building programs to strengthen their leadership effectiveness while also
prioritizing teacher support, student-centered policies, and collaboration among
educational stakeholders. Future research should explore the impact of instructional
strategies, teacher motivation, and school infrastructure on academic performance.
Key words: Conceptual skills, communication skill, Innovative skills, Principal
