Abstract

The study of the possible reversal of renal apoptosis by mixed honey and grape juice through expression of caspace 3, superoxide dismutase and catalase in methotrexate toxified rats was investigated. A total of 36 Wistar rats of 18 males and 18 females weighing 130-250 g were assigned according to body weight into three groups of 12 rats each (6 males and 6 females). Group I was the normal control (NC) and given normal saline for a period of 10 days, while group II was the methotrexate (MTX) group that was orally administered normal saline and injected with MTX intraperitoneally on the 8th day alongside with the normal saline. Group III was the mixed honey and grape juice (HGJ) group that were orally administered mixed honey and grape juice for 10days and injected intraperitoneally with MTX on the 8th day, alongside the grape juice and honey. All the experimental animals were given normal feed and water ad libitum throughout the duration of the experiment which lasted for 10days. At the expiration of the experiment, renal tissue was collected and homogenised in phosphate buffer saline. Biochemical assays for Superoxide Dismutase (SOD), Catalase (CAT) and Caspace-3 were carried using standard methods. The result of kidney SOD activity of male rats showed a significant (p
