THE STUDY ON THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE SECOND AND FOURTH DIGIT RATIO AND SPERM MORPHOLOGY IN INFERTILE MALES
Abstract
Male infertility poses a complex and multifaceted issue that affects a significant portion of the global population. The study was aimed at investigating the digit ratio (2D:4D) and sperm morphology in infertile males. Medical reports of semen analysis of 50 male participants was obtained followed by a measurement of the length of the second and fourth digit ratio from a fertility clinic. materials used to carry out the research includes: Digital Vernier Calipers, Clean white sheet pencil , ethical approval documentations.
The results of the study indicated that right and left digit ratios were 0.99 ± 0.04 and 0.99 ± 0.01 respectively using standard deviation . It was found that a proportion of participants with good sperm morphology shows 80% (n=40), while participants with a Poor sperm morphology was 20% (n=10), comparing the digit ratio of the present research with the standard ratio gives a value that the digit ratio is in a feminine range.
This research study showed non statistical significance between the digit ratio and sperm morphology in infertile males , which coulld be as a result of smaller sample size used in the research. The digit ratio of male participants in this study shows higher digit ratio value which corresponds to high digit ratio as seen in females could be as a result of high exposure to estrogen levels than testosterone levels in embryonic life as implied by different research which support thjs claim, therefore contributing to male infertility.
