COMPARISON OF THE FUEL PARAMETERS OF DIESEL FROM STANDARD (TOTAL, MOBIL, AND IPMAN) AND ARTISANAL REFINERIES
Abstract
This research delves into a meticulous comparative analysis of diesel fuel obtained from five Sources in Nigeria - two known marketers which are supposed to source from established refineries (Total, Lusua) and three artisanal refineries (ARA, ARB, and ARC). Standard methods were used for the determination of density, viscosity, pour point, cloud point, ash content, flash point, and fire point, and total petroleum hydrocarbon was determined by Gas Chromatography.
The density and viscosity from the artisanal refineries were higher (0.8648 - 0.8750; 6.252 - 8.0234 ) than Total and Lasua (0.8495 - 0.8554; 3.8554 - 4.4806 ) respectively. Total and Lasua diesel had lower Pour point (-13oC - -19oC) than those from artisanal refineries (-4oC). The ash content from the artisanal refineries were higher ( 6.5% - 8.22%) than Total and Lasua diesel (3.22% and 2.8%). Flash point was lower for Total and Lasua diesel (84oc and 74oc) than artisanal refineries (90oc - 97oc). N-tetratricontane and higher hydrocarbon were absent in the diesel of Total and Lasua diesel but present in the diesel from artisanal refineries. Lusua emerges with notable advantages in cold-weather operability, showcasing a lower pour and cloud point. However, challenges arise, particularly in ash content, where ARA, ARB, and ARC exhibit higher levels, potentially impacting engine performance and emissions. Results reveal need for continuous monitoring for operational performance of the artisanal diesel and environmental impact of use.
