ADAPTATION STRATEGIES TO CLIMATE VARIABILITY AMONG ARABLE CROP FARMERS IN DELTA STATE
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study examined the adaptation strategies to climate variability among arable crop farmers in Delta State, Nigeria. Climate variability has become a major challenge to agricultural production due to irregular rainfall patterns, increasing temperatures, flooding, drought, and other extreme weather events that adversely affect crop yields and farmers' livelihoods. The study aimed to identify the effects of climate variability on arable crop production, determine the adaptation strategies adopted by farmers, assess the factors influencing the adoption of adaptation measures, and identify the constraints faced by farmers in adapting to climate variability.
A descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The target population comprised arable crop farmers in selected agricultural communities in Delta State. Data were collected through the use of structured questionnaires administered to respondents. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, mean scores, and standard deviation.
The findings revealed that climate variability significantly affects arable crop production through unpredictable rainfall patterns, prolonged dry spells, increased incidence of pests and diseases, soil erosion, flooding, and reduced crop yields. The study further showed that farmers employed various adaptation strategies including adjustment of planting dates, use of improved and drought-resistant crop varieties, mixed cropping, crop diversification, irrigation practices, mulching, application of organic manure, and adoption of soil conservation techniques. The results also indicated that factors such as farmers’ educational level, farming experience, access to extension services, availability of credit facilities, farm size, and access to climate information significantly influence the adoption of adaptation strategies. Major constraints identified include inadequate access to finance, poor extension services, high cost of farm inputs, inadequate irrigation facilities, and limited access to climate-related information.
The study concluded that adaptation strategies play a crucial role in reducing the adverse effects of climate variability on arable crop production and enhancing farmers' resilience. The study recommended that government and relevant stakeholders should strengthen agricultural extension services, improve access to climate information, provide affordable credit facilities, subsidize agricultural inputs, and promote climate-smart agricultural practices among arable crop farmers in Delta State.
