THE ROLE OF COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT IN PUBLIC HEALTH
Abstract
ABSTRACT
Community engagement is widely recognized as a critical component of effective public health
practice, as it promotes community ownership, sustainability, and acceptability of health
interventions. Despite its importance, many public health programs in developing countries,
including Nigeria, continue to adopt top-down approaches that limit community participation.
This study examines the role of community engagement in improving public health outcomes.
It explores how community involvement influences the success of health interventions,
identifies factors that promote or hinder participation, and examines challenges affecting
effective engagement. The study also proposes strategies for strengthening community
involvement in public health initiatives. Findings from this study are expected to contribute to
improved public health planning, enhanced community participation, and more sustainable
health programs.
Keywords: Community engagement, public health, participation, health interventions, Nigeria.
