EFFECT OF IMPROVED COAL-BASED FERTILIZER, NPK AND COW DUNG ON COWPEA GROWTH UNDER IRRIGATION IN BAKASI FARMLAND, MAIDUGURI
Abstract
This study ware be conducted in Bakassi farm land area of Maiduguri Borno state Longitude 11°: 48:39"N, 11°: 49: 39"N Latitude 13°:9:30"E, 13°:10:30"E, To assess the effect of coal fertilizer (Carbontilizer).Cow dung on cowpea production, To assess the effect of coal fertilizer on different
rates of NPK on cowpea production
The experiment consist of Seven (7) treatments, control (without fertilizer). generic (cow dung), high
rate, medium rate, and low rate of the fertilizer and three (3) replications.
T1=Control (0t/ha)
T2=Generic (100% Carbontilizer)
T3=50:50 mix (50% Carbontilizer, 50% NPK)
T4=75:25 mix (75% Carbontilizer, 25% NPK)
T5=25:75 mix (25% Carbontilizer. 75% NPK)
T6=100% NPK
T7=-Cow dung
Plot Size: The plot size for all crops is 3 m by 3m. giving a plot area of 9m2. A discard of 0.5m-
should be allowed between plots and 1m between replications.
Total Area under Experiment:
11m x 24m= 264m² Cowpea
The findings highlight the importance of balanced fertilizer application in cowpea production. The
combination of Carbontilizer 50% and NPK 50%(e.g., T3) provided a favorable balance of immediate
and slow nutrient release, improving growth, physiological attributes, and yield. Although 100%
NPK (T6) performed well in the short term. Its sustainability may be limited.
