EFFECT OF LOAN MANAGEMENT ON THE FINANCIAL PERFORMANCE OF ZENITH BANKS IN ANYIGBA
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study examined the effect of loan management on the financial performance of Zenith
Bank, Anyigba Branch. Loan management is a critical function in the banking sector as it
influences profitability, liquidity, asset quality, and overall financial stability. The study sought
to determine the extent to which effective loan management practices contribute to the financial
performance of the bank. Specifically, the research focused on loan appraisal, loan monitoring,
loan recovery procedures, and their impact on the bank's profitability and operational efficiency.
A descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. Primary data were collected
through the administration of structured questionnaires to staff members of Zenith Bank,
Anyigba Branch, while secondary data were obtained from relevant textbooks, journals, annual
reports, and other published materials. The collected data were analysed using descriptive
statistics such as frequencies, percentages, mean scores, and inferential statistical techniques
where necessary.
The findings revealed that effective loan appraisal and monitoring significantly reduce the
incidence of loan defaults and non-performing loans, thereby enhancing the financial
performance of the bank. The study also found that efficient loan recovery mechanisms
contribute positively to profitability and liquidity management. Furthermore, poor loan
management practices were identified as major factors responsible for increased credit risk and
reduced financial performance.
Based on the findings, the study concluded that sound loan management practices are essential
for improving the financial performance of Zenith Bank. The study recommended that the bank
should strengthen its credit appraisal procedures, improve monitoring and recovery strategies,
and continuously train staff on modern credit risk management techniques. These measures will
help minimise loan defaults, improve profitability, and ensure sustainable growth in the banking
sector.
