Abstract

This study explores the presence of heavy metals chromium, cadmium, nickel, and lead, in prepared do-it-yourself (DIY) or homemade eyeliners formulated with natural ingredients such as Tiro (kohlpowder) and Aloe vera. The experiment focuses on selected heavy metals in preapared Tiro eyeliner, Do it yourself (DIY) eyeliner, in Aloe vera eyeliner using two digestion methods [Aqua regia and EDTA solution with Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS). In EDTA digestion method, the concentration of Pb range from 9.99 to 3822.06mg/kg;Fe from 1.261 to 69.76;Cr from 0.00 to 2.99mg/kg;Cd from 0.087 to 3.454mg/kg; and Ni from 0.479 to4.605 mg/kg. However, in aqua regia extraction, the concentraton of Pd range from 284.71 to 6721.2mg/kg;Fe from 42.61 to 3423.9mg/kg;Cr from 0.706 to 2.311mg/kg;Cd from 0.059 to 20.57mg/kg; and Ni from 0.177 to 6.471mg/kg. For EDTA digestion method; Heavy metals in kohl powder sample shows that Pb>Fe>Ni>Cd>Cr. While in DIY eyeliner sample Pb>Fe>NI>Cr>Cd.In the aloevera eyeliner, Pb>Fe>Ni>Cd>Cr. For Aqua regia digestion method; Heavy metals in kohl powder sample shows that Pb>Fe>Cr>Ni>Cd. While in DIY eyeliner sample Pb>Fe>Cr>Ni>Cd.In the aloevera eyeliner,Pb>Ni>Cd>Ni>Cr. The results showed high concentration of heavy metals in kolh powder (tiro) followed by Aloevera eyeliner and DIY eyeliner samples. Most of the values obtained were present in more than required limit of World Health Organization (WHO). Keywords: Heavy metals, chromium, cadmium, nickel, lead, Eye cosmetics (kolh powder(tiro),DIY eyeliner and Aloevera eyeliner).
