LOSS OF TIME IN NEWS PRESENTATION: A STUDY OF RIVERS STATE TELEVISION
Abstract
When information that should be disseminated to the public on time is delayed, it creates a gap.
This delay creates gaps and delays in the process of information sharing and communication.
This study examined the causes of delays that lead to time loss, thereby creating space in news
presentation. The study aimed to look at how technology can be used as a tool to bridge the gap
and space created in information dissemination in broadcasting news organizations. Four
objectives guided the study, which are: to ascertain the duration of time from coverage and airing
of news in RSTV, to find out the reason for the gap in news dissemination by RSTV, to examine
how internet-enabled devices can be used in closing the gap in RSTV, and to determine factors
that could impede the closing of gaps in news dissemination by RSTV. Four research questions
were used to investigate the study, which are; What is the time duration used for coverage and
airing of news in RSTV, what are the reasons for the gap in news dissemination by RSTV, how
can the internet enable devices can be use in closing the gap in RSTV, and what are the factors
that could impede the closing of gaps in news dissemination by RSTV. The study was anchored
on the Diffusion of Innovation theory. The survey method uses observation and an interview
guide as an instrument for collecting data. The findings indicated that inadequate procurement of
state-of-the-art broadcasting equipment, lack of funding, and manpower development are some
of the reasons for the delay and loss of time in news presentation. The study recommended that
there should be an upgrade of the station, operational equipment, the engineering and
communication gadgets, and funding of the station. Furthermore, that recruitment of staff should
be based on proven competence and the acquisition of requisite skills and experience, and finally,
to allow professionals to handle some of the programmes
