Abstract

ABSTRACT This study evaluated pesticide residues and organic pollutants in soil and water from Waziri Ibrahim and Dikumari irrigation farmlands in Damaturu, Yobe State. Using standard sampling and chromatographic analysis, several harmful contaminants were detected, including PAHs, phthalates, volatile organics, and pesticides. Many compounds—such as aldrin, benzo[a]pyrene, bromodichloromethane, fenitrothion, and various hydrocarbons—were found at concentrations exceeding international safety limits. Both locations showed evidence of significant environmental pollution linked to agricultural runoff, petroleum products, improper pesticide use, and plastic waste. The presence of banned and carcinogenic chemicals indicates potential risks to soil quality, water safety, crop contamination, and human health via bioaccumulation. The study emphasizes the need for stronger pesticide regulation, routine monitoring, farmer training, and integrated pest management to reduce environmental and public health hazards.
