Abstract

ABSTRACT The study was conducted to evaluate and compare the performance characteristics and haematological profile of an improved Nigerian indigenous or local broiler and three exotic strains. A total of two hundred (200) day old broiler chicks of Nigerian and foreign hybrids comprising fifty (50) each of four different strains were used in a completely randomized design. They were designated as T1 (Arbor Acre), T2 (Cobb), T3 (FUNAAB alpha and T4 (Ross 308) and assigned to a proprietary feed. The experiment lasted for six (6) weeks. The results for performance measurements revealed that values recorded for Initial weight, final weight, total weight gain, mean daily feed intake and average daily weight gain were highest (P
