ENTREPRENEURSHIP ENGAGEMENT AMONG YOUTHS; SOCIAL AND GENDER DIFFERENTIALS AS PERCEIVED BY SAGAMU COMMUNITY AREA IN OGUN STATE
Abstract
This research delves into the involvement of young people in entrepreneurial activities within the Sagamu community of Ogun State, paying particular attention to variations based on social factors and gender. By surveying a sample of 200 individuals, the study investigates various aspects including the demographic characteristics, educational qualifications, patterns of business ownership, and the extent of engagement in entrepreneurial ventures among the youth.
The findings indicate that females are more actively participating in entrepreneurship, making up 60% of the respondents, whereas males constitute 40%. The age group showing the highest level of engagement is those between 26 to 30 years old.
Despite the considerable involvement in entrepreneurship, the study identifies several significant challenges faced by these young entrepreneurs. These include difficulties in accessing capital, intense market competition, and various regulatory obstacles. The support from family members is highlighted as a vital factor contributing to the success of these entrepreneurial endeavors.
Interestingly, the research suggests that gender does not significantly affect the outcomes of entrepreneurial activities, contrary to common assumptions. However, there is a notable dissatisfaction among the respondents regarding the level of support from the government, suggesting an urgent need for better policies and programs to assist young entrepreneurs.
The study concludes with several recommendations aimed at enhancing the entrepreneurial environment in Sagamu. These include improving financial support mechanisms, providing more opportunities for skill development, simplifying regulatory processes, enhancing infrastructure, and promoting gender equality. By addressing these areas, the research provides valuable insights and strategic suggestions for nurturing a more supportive and thriving entrepreneurial ecosystem for the youth in Sagamu.
