Abstract

This study explores the perception of cultural violence against women in Anyigba, Kogi State, Nigeria. The study aimed at assessing the prevalence of cultural violence against woman in Anyigba, the common forms of cultural violence, the causes of cultural violence against women, the consequences of cultural violence against women and the strategies for curtailing cultural violence against women in Anyigba. Employing the Feminist Perspective on Media Theory, and descriptive research design, data were collected from 350 respondents, representing 88% of the initial sample size of 399, through a structured questionnaire. The study finds that 62% of respondents agree that cultural violence against women is a common issue in Anyigba. Verbal abuse and physical violence are identified as prevalent forms, with mean scores of 2.7 and 2.5 respectively. The analysis shows that patriarchal values and gender inequality are major causes, with 68.6% agreeing, while poverty is less strongly linked (54% disagreement). The consequences of cultural violence include negative impacts on socioeconomic status (68.3% agreement) and educational opportunities (66% agreement). The study notes that government interventions are perceived as inadequate, with only 65.1% agreeing that current measures are insufficient. Effective strategies identified include education and awareness campaigns (66.3% agreement), involvement of community leaders (64.3% agreement), and implementation of strict laws and policies (69.1% agreement). The role of NGOs is also supported (66.5% agreement). The study concludes that cultural violence against women in Anyigba is a significant issue, driven by deep-seated patriarchal values and gender inequality. The consequences are severe, affecting women's mental health, socioeconomic status, and educational opportunities. Despite some community awareness and agreement on effective strategies, current government interventions are insufficient, necessitating a comprehensive and multi-stakeholder approach. Recommendations emphasize expanding educational initiatives, strengthening legal frameworks, enhancing government interventions, and supporting NGO efforts.
