MEASUREMENTS OF BACKGROUND RADIATION LEVELS IN AND AROUND JOSEPH SARWUAN TARKA UNIVERSITY CLINIC MAKURDI
Abstract
Background radiation is a critical parameter that influences the health and safety of populations,
particularly in medical settings such as hospitals. This research investigates the levels of
background radiation in and around the university clinic, focusing on the potential sources and
health implications for both patients and healthcare workers. Utilizing Geiger-Muller counters
and dosimeters, we conducted measurements at various locations within the hospital, including
patient wards, diagnostic imaging areas, and administrative offices, as well as in the surrounding
environment. The results revealed that background radiation levels varied significantly across
different sites, with some areas registering levels above the average safety threshold set by
international guidelines. Factors contributing to elevated radiation levels, such as local
geological formations and the use of radiological equipment, were analyzed. Furthermore, the
study evaluates the implications of these findings for public health policies and radiation safety
protocols within healthcare settings. Recommendations for improving monitoring practices and
enhancing protective measures are proposed, emphasizing the need for continued surveillance and
education on radiation safety in hospitals. The findings contribute to the broader understanding
of environmental radiation and its impact on health in the Nigerian context, highlighting the
importance of proactive measures to mitigate risks associated with background radiation
exposure.
