Abstract

This study critically examined the impact of internet technology on newspaper production, using Graphic Newspaper in Lokoja, Kogi State, as a case study. Anchored on the Technological Determinism Theory, which argues that technological innovations drive societal transformation and media practices (McLuhan, 1964), the research explored how internet tools influence news gathering, editing, page design, dissemination, readership, and organizational challenges. The study employed a descriptive survey design, targeting the full population of 40 editorial, ICT, and production staff of the newspaper. A total of 37 valid questionnaires were retrieved and analyzed using frequency tables and simple percentages. Findings revealed that internet adoption has significantly improved operational efficiency, speed of content creation, and access to broader audiences via online platforms. Staff confirmed increased reliance on digital tools such as emails, social media, and publishing software for seamless content production. However, the study also identified critical challenges including weak internet infrastructure, inadequate digital training, and inconsistent power supply. Despite these constraints, the internet presents transformative opportunities for enhancing productivity, reducing operational costs, and expanding readership reach beyond physical boundaries. The study concluded that internet technologies are not merely complementary tools but essential components for modern newspaper survival and growth in the digital age. It recommended that media organizations like Graphic Newspaper invest in stable digital infrastructure, offer regular ICT capacity-building for staff, strengthen their online presence, and adopt dual-platform publishing strategies to cater to diverse readership. Additionally, partnerships with ICT service providers and implementation of cybersecurity measures were advised to safeguard operations and content integrity. These recommendations, if implemented, would ensure that traditional newspapers remain relevant and competitive in Nigeria's rapidly evolving information ecosystem.
