Abstract

ABSTRACT This study investigated the impact of online gambling (sports betting and blackjack) on the academic performance and social behaviour of students at Prince Abubakar Audu University, Anyigba, Kogi State. The objectives were to: (1) assess the extent of students’ involvement in online gambling, (2) examine the effect of online gambling on their academic performance, (3) determine the influence of online gambling on their social behaviour, and (4) identify possible strategies for mitigating its negative impact. The study adopted a descriptive survey design, and data were collected from a sample of 400 students using a structured questionnaire. Descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, and mean scores were used for analysis. The findings revealed a high prevalence of online gambling among students, with sports betting being the most popular form. The study found that excessive involvement in online gambling negatively affects students’ academic performance by reducing study time, increasing absenteeism, and impairing concentration. It also showed that online gambling influences social behaviour, leading to increased peer pressure, engagement in risky behaviours, financial strain, and strained interpersonal relationships. The study concludes that online gambling poses a significant threat to both the academic success and social well-being of university students. It recommends awareness campaigns, the integration of gambling education into student orientation programs, stronger institutional regulations on gambling-related activities, and the promotion of alternative recreational activities on campus. This research contributes to knowledge by providing empirical evidence from a Nigerian university context, highlighting the specific academic and social implications of online gambling among undergraduates, and proposing culturally relevant intervention strategies.
