Abstract

Smoked fish is a good source of protein available for human consumption. The aim of this research is to investigate insect infestations of smoked fish sold in market within Makurdi, Benue State, Nigeria. A total of one hundred and ninth eight (198) smoked fishes were obtained from three (3) different markets. Data collected were analyzed using simple percentages and Chi square analysis test to determine the distribution of insect pest of smoked fish. Out of 198 samples examined for insect infestation, 49 (24.7%) were infested. Insect infestation across market indicates that Modern market 26(39.4%), had the highest prevalence followed by Wadata market 12(18.2%), and Wurukum market 11(16.7%) had the lowest infestation rate. There was significant difference in the prevalence of insect infestation across markets (P0.05). The prevalence of insects among smoked fish species in relation to markets revealed that Clarias sp 54(27.3%), had the highest while Tilapia zillii 19(9.6%). had the lowest prevalence. No statistically difference (P>0.05) in insects’ infestation in relation to fish species. Fish sellers should monitor the smoked fish during storage and dried it once in a while to avoid infestation or re infestation of insect pest
