IMPACT OF ROAD TRANSPORTATION INFRASTRUCTURE ON ECONOMIC GROWTH IN NYANYA METROPOLIS
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study investigates the impact of road transportation infrastructure on economic growth in Nyanya Metropolis, Abuja. Road networks are essential for economic and social development as they promote trade, employment, and investment. However, poor road conditions, congestion, and inadequate maintenance in Nyanya hinder sustainable economic growth. The study aims to assess how road infrastructure influences economic performance, business activities, and transport efficiency within the metropolis. Using a survey design, data were collected from 372 respondents, including residents, business owners, and transport operators, through structured questionnaires. Descriptive and inferential analyses—such as correlation and regression—were used to examine the relationship between road infrastructure and key economic indicators like business productivity, employment, and investment levels. Findings revealed a strong positive correlation (r = 0.825, p < 0.01) between road infrastructure and economic growth, showing that improved road conditions enhance trade, mobility, and productivity. About 68.9% of variations in economic growth were attributed to the state of road infrastructure and related challenges. Despite this, issues such as poor maintenance, inadequate funding, and traffic congestion continue to limit road efficiency and economic potential. The study concludes that effective road transport infrastructure greatly contributes to economic growth in Nyanya by improving accessibility and business operations. It recommends increased government and private sector investment in road maintenance, adoption of public–private partnerships for sustainable funding, and implementation of comprehensive urban transport planning. Strengthening transport systems is vital for achieving inclusive and sustained economic growth in Nyanya and similar urban areas.
