EXTRACTION AND PHYSIOCHEMICALCHARATERIZATION OF SHEA BUTTER SEED OIL
Abstract
ABSTRACT
Shea butter seed was grounded into powder and using a mortar and pestle in the laboratory. Oil was extracted from the seed by soxhlet extractor using n-hexane as the solvent. Standard methods were adopted in the analysis of the physiochemical properties specific gravity, iodine value, acid value free fatty acid and methods points were all evaluated. The specific gravity was 0.900g/cm, iodine value 37.4mg/l, saponification value 204.2mg/KOH Acid value is 12.4mgKOH/g, free fatty acid 6.2mgKOH and melting point is 51.80c. This result shows that oil from Shea butter has the potential for broad application in pharmaceutical and cosmetic industry.
