Abstract

This study explore effects of Insecurity on socio-economic development in Ankpa Local Government Area, Kogi State, Nigeria. Insecurity has emerged as a significant threat to socio-economic development in Nigeria, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas like Ankpa Local Government Area (LGA) of Kogi State. The pervasive rise in Insecurity incidents disrupts economic activities, discourages investment, and undermines public confidence in security institutions. Ankpa LGA, with its dependence on agriculture, small-scale trade, and transportation, faces severe economic stagnation due to the constant fear of abduction. Farmers are unable to access their farmlands, traders avoid high-risk areas, and potential investors shy away from the region, resulting in declining productivity and income levels. The economic impact of Insecurity in Nigeria is profound, with small businesses and agricultural sectors being the hardest hit. The persistent insecurity has deterred investment in affected areas, further exacerbating poverty and underdevelopment. In Ankpa LGA, the loss of economic opportunities due to Insecurity undermines the region's potential for growth and sustainable development. The research adopted descriptive survey method as the research design for the study. A total of 350 responses were used for the survey. The study revealed that the findings showed that the study revealed that several socio-economic factors contribute to the rising cases of Insecurity in Ankpa LGA. Key among these factors are high unemployment rates, widespread poverty, lack of education, poor governance, and the breakdown of social and security structures. The study found that Insecurity has had a profoundly negative impact on small-scale businesses and trade in Ankpa LGAThe study identified several efforts aimed at addressing Insecurity and restoring economic stability. These include increased collaboration between local vigilante groups and formal security agencies, community sensitization programs, and government-led initiatives to improve youth empowerment through skills acquisition and employment schemes. Based on the findings, the study recommended that the government should prioritize creating and implementing comprehensive youth empowerment programs focused on education, skills acquisition, and job creation to address the root socio-economic causes of Insecurity, particularly unemployment and poverty. Security agencies should enhance their presence and collaboration with local vigilante groups in rural and peri-urban areas of Ankpa LGA to improve intelligence gathering, rapid response, and community-based policing to reduce Insecurity incidents effectively. A coordinated multi-sectoral approach involving government, civil society, and the private sector should be established to strengthen infrastructural development, improve governance, and foster an enabling environment for small-scale businesses to thrive despite security challenges.
