FORMANCE OF MAIZE (ZEE MAYS)VARIETIES AS AFFECTED BY UREA FORMULATION IN NORTHERN GUINEA SAVANNA OF NIGERIA
Abstract
This study investigated the performance of maize (Zea mays L.) varieties under different urea fertilizer formulations in the Northern Guinea Savanna of Nigeria. The experiment was conducted to evaluate the growth, yield, and nitrogen use efficiency of selected maize varieties under conventional and enhanced-efficiency urea fertilizers. A factorial experiment consisting of three maize varieties and four urea formulations was arranged in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Data were collected on plant height, leaf area, days to tasseling, grain yield, and yield components. Results indicated significant differences among maize varieties and urea formulations. Enhanced-efficiency urea formulations significantly improved growth parameters and grain yield compared to conventional urea. The interaction between maize varieties and urea formulations also significantly affected yield performance. The study concluded that the use of enhanced-efficiency urea fertilizers can improve maize productivity in the Northern Guinea Savanna. Adoption of suitable maize varieties combined with improved urea formulations is recommended for sustainable maize production
