Abstract
This study examined the impact of the Think-Pair-Share strategy on Lagos State Junior Secondary
School students’ engagement and academic achievement in English Language. the study adopted a
mixed method approach involving control and experimental groups. A total of 40 Junior Secondary
School II students were selected from two schools in Lagos State. Achievement tests and engagement
questionnaires served as the major instruments for data collection. Data were analyzed using
descriptive statistics, ANCOVA, Independent sample test and one-sample t-test at a 0.05 level of
significance. Findings revealed that students taught using the (TPS)demonstrated significantly
higher academic achievement (M = 24.90, SD = 3.28) compared to those taught with traditional
methods (M = 15.60, SD = 2.48), F(1,37) = 22.690, p = .000. Findings from Hypothesis One
revealed a significant difference in academic achievement between students taught using the TPS
strategy and those taught through the conventional method, F(1,37) = 22.690, p = .000, indicating
that TPS significantly improved students’ academic performance in English Language. Results
from Hypothesis Two using a one-sample t-test showed that students’ engagement was
significantly enhanced by the TPS strategy, with all engagement indicators yielding p < .05. This
suggests that TPS promoted active participation, collaboration, and critical thinking during
English lessons. Hypothesis Three, analyzed using an independent-samples t-test, revealed no
significant difference in academic achievement between male and female students taught with TPS,
t(38) = 0.739, p = 0.454, showing that gender did not influence achievement outcomes The study
concludes that the Think-Pair-Share strategy is an effective instructional approach for improving
students’ achievement and engagement in English Language. Overall, the study concludes that the
Think-Pair-Share strategy is an effective instructional approach for improving both academic
achievement and classroom engagement in English Language.
