STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS OF WORKPLACE COMMUNICATION: A CASE STUDY OF FACULTY OF ARTS AND HUMANITIES, PRINCE ABUBAKAR AUDU UNIVERSITY, ANYIGBA.
Abstract
This study investigated the structural analysis of workplace communication in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Prince Abubakar Audu University, Anyigba. It was premised on the understanding that effective communication is fundamental to organizational success, as it sustains cooperation, efficiency, and trust among staff. Conversely, communication breakdowns can lead to anger, cynicism, misinterpretations, and loss of respect, thereby creating an unhealthy workplace environment. The research adopted a quantitative design and was guided by systems theory, which views communication as an interconnected process essential to organizational functioning. Data were collected from the Department of English and Literary Studies to assess the common channels of communication, their frequency of use, and the challenges associated with them. The study showed that departmental meetings and official memos were the most widely used communication channels (100%). Social media platforms and face-to-face interactions followed closely (90%), while phone calls were used less frequently (70%). The study further revealed that workplace communication significantly enhanced the timely completion of tasks, reflected in the highest mean score (Mean = 4.9). However, delay in communication emerged as the major challenge, affecting 90% of respondents. The study contributes to knowledge by showing how traditional and modern communication structures function together in a university workplace context.
