PRELIMINARY PHYTOCHEMICAL SCREENING OF SABICEA BRASILIENSIS
Abstract
ABSTRACT
Sabicea brasiliensis ,a medical plant widely used particularly in America, is known for it’s
therapeutic potential in treating swellings, female genital infections and inflammations .This study
aims to conduct a comprehensive phytochemical screening of the roots of Sabicea brasiliensis to
identify it’s key bioactive constituents .Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC),extraction and
qualitative phytochemical tests were employed to identify major secondary metabolites. The result
revealed the presence of steroids, saponins alkaloids and glycosides. The methanol extract yielded
10.15% of crude extract indicating the presence of polar and moderately polar compounds .TLC
analysis showed five distinct spots with retention factor(Rf) values ranging from 0.34 to 0.73
suggesting a diverse chemical profile. These findings validate the traditional medicinal uses of
Sabicea brasiliensis and highlights it’s potential as a source of novel therapeutic agent. Further
studies are recommended to explore specific pharmacological activities and optimize extraction
techniques for enhance yields and identification of bioactive compounds.
