SYNTHESIS OF ADSORBENTS FOR OIL SPILL REMEDIATION (CLEANING OF OIL-SPILL CONTAMINATED SOIL) USING WASTE WATER SACHET(LDPE) AND SPENT ENGINE OIL
Abstract
In this study, the conversation of waste water packaging material to oil absorbent for the
remediation of oil spillage was investigated. Absorbent film was produced by melt- mixing the
waste Plastic with solvent, introduction of various additives, followed by solvent extraction to
generate pores. The solvents: Mineral oil and condemned oil were compared. Varying ratios of
Low-density polyethylene (LDPE) to High density polyethylene (HDPE) from 1:1 to 1:4 were
used. The Polymer solvent ratio was also varied from 10:90, 20:80 then 30:70. It was found that
the LDPE and HDPE ratio 1:4 and the polymer to solvent ratio 10:90 gave the results. The
temperature effect on the uptake capacity was also investigated. It was found that an increase in
temperature improved the uptake capacity. Also, an isocyanate to polymer blend of 1:1 produced
the best results. Absorbent with an uptake capacity of more than 100% its weight was achieved.
The samples were characterized using SEM to examine the pore distribution. From the SEM
results, it was confirmed that the use of isocyanate increased the porosity of the reusability and the
recyclability of the absorbent and provide environmentally safe synthesis methods.
