Abstract

This study examines the role of education in reducing income inequality in Ibaji Local Government Area (LGA) of Kogi State, Nigeria. Education has long been recognized as a powerful tool for fostering economic growth, social mobility, and equitable distribution of resources. However, income inequality persists in many rural areas, raising questions about the effectiveness and accessibility of education in bridging economic gaps. The study employed a descriptive survey design, collecting data from a representative sample of residents in Ibaji LGA through structured questionnaires and interviews. The findings reveal a significant relationship between access to quality education and reduction in income disparities, as individuals with higher levels of education tend to secure better employment opportunities and earn higher incomes compared to their less-educated counterparts. The study also highlights challenges such as poor infrastructure, inadequate funding, and limited educational facilities that hinder the equitable distribution of educational opportunities. Based on these findings, it is recommended that government and stakeholders invest more in educational development, particularly in rural communities, by improving school infrastructure, ensuring teacher competence, and implementing policies that enhance access to quality education for all. By addressing these issues, education can serve as a vital instrument in narrowing the income gap and promoting sustainable development in Ibaji LGA.
