Abstract

Abstract This study investigates the relationship between government health expenditure and economic development in Nigeria covering the period of 1990 to 2023. The study used annual time series data sourced from Central Bank of Nigeria’s Statistical Bulletin and World Bank’s Development Indicators. The study employed descriptive statistics, Augmented Dickey Fuller, Johansen Co-integration test, and the Auto-Regressive Distributive Lag (ARDL) Model. The outcome revealed that there is a positive and significant relationship between Human Development Index (HDI- used as proxy for economic development) and two key independent variables namely; capital health expenditure and life expectancy rate at birth. This implies that a unit change in capital expenditure on health brings about approximately 0.86 (86%) change in Economic Development via Human Development Index in the study period. The study therefore recommends that the government should provide adequate facilities and also employ professionals to enhance the health sector for the safety of lives, which will in-turn bring about the growth and development of the nation.
