Abstract

Flooding is a complex natural phenomenon characterized by the overflow of water from rivers, lakes, or other bodies of water, which poses significant threats to life, property, and the environment. Flooding has emerged as a significant environmental challenge in Nigeria, particularly illustrated by the catastrophic floods in Borno State. This research investigates the public health impacts of flooding in Gwange Community and Galtimari Camp, Maiduguri, using data from 500 respondents. The study reveals that the largest age group among respondents was 18-25 years (33.0%), while the smallest group was 58 years and above (6.4%). Educational attainment varied, with secondary education being the most common level (34.6%). Economically, the majority of respondents (36.0%) earned between N10,000 and N20,000 monthly, highlighting significant economic vulnerability. Pre-flood health conditions included high prevalence rates of malaria (69.2%), typhoid (68.0%), and diarrhea (66.8%), while cholera was less common (8.0%). Despite these challenges, only 10% of respondents reported receiving medication before the floods. Post-flood, 85.2% of respondents observed a visible increase in diseases, and 85.6% reported mental health impacts, underscoring the profound health implications of flooding Healthcare access was rated as "Poor" or "Very Poor" by 86.8% of respondents, further exacerbating the crisis. The findings emphasize the urgent need for improved healthcare infrastructure, mental health services, disaster preparedness, and targeted public health interventions to mitigate the health impacts of flooding. This study highlights the critical need for multi-sectoral approaches to enhance resilience and safeguard vulnerable communities from future flooding events.
