PROBLEMS OF MAINTAINING EFFECTIVE RECORD MANAGEMENT IN AN ORGANIZATION
Abstract
ABSTRACT
The study was undertaken to examine problems of maintaining effective record management in an organization. To facilitate the conduct of the study, four purposes were postulated from which four research questions were raised. The study adopted the descriptive survey design. The population for the study consisted of 67 staff of Industrial Training Fund Headquarters, Jos. The entire population was adopted in view of the fact that the population was not too large. The questionnaire was the main instrument for data collection; the instrument was subjected to face and content validation by the researcher's supervisor. Data collected for the study were analyzed using the mean rating on a four-point scale.
The study clearly reveals that retraining programmes on record management will help record managers identify and classify records accordingly, and organizations should afford to employ a good number of record management personnel for efficiency and effectiveness. The study concluded that encouragement and adequate knowledge, skills, and competencies on record management will enable record managers to treat records well without compromising their work and professional ethics. The researcher recommended that management should improve the method of storage, training and retraining of record managers, and there should be proper supervision to enable record managers to keep track of every transaction.
