Abstract

ABSTRAСТ This study critically evaluates the usage and integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies among economics students at Prince Abubakar Audu University, Anyigba. As AI continues to transform educational landscapes globally, understanding its adoption at the tertiary level, particularly within Nigerian institutions, has become increasingly important. The research aims to assess students' awareness, accessibility, usage patterns, perceived benefits, and challenges related to Al tools such as chatbots, data analysis software, and Al-assisted learning platforms. A mixed-methods approach was employed, involving the distribution of structured questionnaires to a representative sample of economics students and the conduction of focus group discussions to capture deeper insights. The findings indicate a relatively high level of awareness of AI among students, yet actual usage remains limited. Key barriers include lack of adequate training, insufficient infrastructure, and limited curriculum integration. Despite these challenges, students who engage with AI tools report improvements in research efficiency, understanding of economic models, and academic performance. The study concludes that strategic efforts such as the inclusion of Al-related modules in the economics curriculum, increased investment in digital infrastructure, and organized capacity-building workshops-are essential to promote the meaningful and effective use of Al in higher education. These findings offer valuable implications for educational policy formulation, institutional planning, and technological integration within Nigerian universities and beyond.
