Abstract

The study investigates the instructional methods and techniques used in teaching animal husbandry in senior secondary schools within Guma Local Government Area, Benue State. Given the critical role of animal husbandry education in preparing students for agricultural careers and contributing to food security, this research identifies current teaching practices and assesses their impact on student engagement, knowledge retention, and skill development. The study employs a descriptive survey methodology, gathering data from 227 secondary school students through structured questionnaires. Results show a mean response of 2.70 to 2.80 across instructional techniques, indicating a generally high level of effectiveness in teaching practices. Nevertheless, a reliance on lecture-based methods limits interactive and practical learning, potentially affecting students’ real-world preparedness. The findings conclude that addressing these challenges through increased resource allocation and administrative support is essential for improving animal husbandry education. Recommendations include prioritizing the acquisition of modern teaching materials, reducing class sizes, and extending time allocations for practical sessions to enhance educational outcomes in the field of animal husbandry.
