Abstract

ABSTRACT This study was conducted to evaluate the nutritional composition and quality of three commercially available layer chicken feeds sold in Kano State, Nigeria. The objective was to determine the proximate and mineral compositions of the feeds, compare the observed nutrient values with recommended standards for laying hens, and identify possible nutritional deficiencies or excesses that may affect egg production and bird health. Three brands of commercial layer feeds were randomly collected from feed distributors and retailers within Kano Metropolis and coded as Feed A, Feed B, and Feed C. Samples were analyzed using standard analytical procedures of the Association of Official Analytical Chemists (AOAC). Parameters determined included moisture content, crude protein, ether extract, crude fibre, ash content, nitrogen-free extract, metabolizable energy, and selected mineral elements. Data obtained were subjected to analysis of variance (ANOVA) using SAS statistical software. The results revealed variations in both proximate and mineral compositions among the feed brands, indicating differences in formulation and ingredient quality. Some nutrient values were within the recommended range for laying hens, while others showed slight deviations from established standards. The findings suggest that not all commercial layer feeds available in the market provide the same nutritional quality. Therefore, regular quality assessment and monitoring of commercial poultry feeds are necessary to ensure compliance with nutritional standards and to enhance poultry productivity, profitability, and food security.
