Abstract

ABSTRACT This study examined the impact of unsocial working hours on health workers at JummaiBabangidaAliyu Maternal and Neonatal Hospital, Minna. A descriptive cross-sectional survey design was adopted, and a sample size of 185 was determined using Yamane’s formula. Data were collected from 101 respondents through structured questionnaires and analyzed using SPSS. Findings revealed that 78.2% of respondents work night or irregular shifts, with 49.5% reporting moderate to severe health effects. More than half (56.4%) also admitted to fatigue-related work errors. Common coping strategies included taking rest breaks, maintaining a healthy diet, and seeking social support. The study concludes that unsocial working hours negatively affect health workers’ physical health, mental well-being, family life, and job performance. It recommends balanced shift scheduling, fatigue management training, and improved staff welfare policies to promote better occupational health and patient safety.
