ATTITUDE OF UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT TOWARDS PEERS WITH SICKLE CELL DISEASE.
Abstract
Sickle cell disease (SCD) is an inherited health disorder and condition with global concern. About
4.4 million people have sickle cell disease condition while about 43 million have the trait of sickle
cell trait. Sub-Saharan Africa has the highest prevalence of sickle cell cases, with a high mortality
resulting from this occurrence. Studies have reported a poor knowledge level ofsickle cell disorder
among university students as well as their attitude towards peers with sickle cell disease and the
implications for inclusion and supportive environment. Accordingly, this study determined the
level of knowledge, perception and the attitude of undergraduates on Sickle Cell Disease in
selected universities in Ogun state. It also provided and understanding of the existing support
systems for undergraduates with Sickle Cell Disease in selected universities in Ogun state.
The study employed a Descriptive Correlational Research Design and multistage random sampling
technique to select 265 undergraduate students at Babcock University. While questionnaires were
used for the collection of data, the analysis of data was done using the statistical package for social
sciences (SPSS) to generate descriptive analysis of frequency distribution tables and percentages.
The result of the study showed that on the average, there is a high level of knowledge (70.3%)
among undergraduates about the sickle cell disease condition. It also showed that on an average of
68.3%, students have the right perception about the sickle cell disease condition. Furthermore, it
was revealed that at an average of 84.9%, there is a positive attitude towards peers who have sickle
cell disease condition. Finally, at an average of 80.2%, there is lack of existing support systems
for students with sickle cell disease condition in Babcock University.
The study concluded that a good level of knowledge, right perception and attitude of
undergraduates on Sickle Cell Disease as well as the provision of the good support systems for
undergraduates with Sickle Cell Disease in selected universities in Ogun state will help in
providing an inclusive and supportive environment for students with sickle cell disease
