ASSESSMENT OF AGRIBUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES AMONG YOUTH IN KURA LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA KANO STATE, NIGERIA
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study assessed agribusiness opportunities among youth in Kura Local Government Area of Kano State, Nigeria. The study was conducted to determine the level of youth participation in agribusiness activities, identify available agribusiness opportunities, examine factors influencing youth involvement, and highlight the challenges limiting their participation in the agricultural sector. Data were collected from selected youth respondents through the use of structured questionnaires and personal interviews. Descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, means, and tables were used to analyze the data obtained.
The findings revealed that a considerable number of youths were engaged in various agribusiness enterprises including crop production, livestock farming, poultry production, agro-processing, agricultural marketing, and input supply services. The study further showed that access to land, capital, training, extension services, and market opportunities significantly influenced youth participation in agribusiness activities. Major constraints identified included inadequate access to finance, insufficient technical knowledge, poor infrastructure, limited government support, and market uncertainties.
The study concluded that agribusiness offers substantial opportunities for employment generation, income creation, poverty reduction, and economic empowerment among rural youth in Kura Local Government Area. It was recommended that government agencies, financial institutions, and development organizations should strengthen support programs aimed at improving access to credit facilities, agricultural training, modern technologies, and market linkages for young agripreneurs. Such interventions will encourage greater youth participation in agribusiness and contribute to sustainable agricultural and economic development.
