Abstract

The construction industry is a major contributor to national development and economic growth. Within this sector, Small and Medium Construction Firms (SMCFs) play a pivotal role in promoting employment, innovation, and local participation. However, despite their relevance, many SMCFs in Abuja face persistent challenges that threaten their growth and sustainability. This study aimed at investigating strategies for sustaining Small and Medium Construction Firms in Abuja with a view to enhancing their long-term viability. A probability sampling technique was employed, and data were collected from one hundred and sixty-four (164) respondents using a quantitative structured questionnaire. Out of the distributed questionnaires, one hundred and fortyeight (148) were duly completed and used for analysis. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and mean score ranking techniques. Findings revealed that inadequate access to capital, high cost of materials, and weak technical and managerial capacities were among the most critical challenges affecting SMCFs’ performance, resulting in cost overruns, project delays, and reduced profitability. The study concluded that improved financial accessibility, managerial competence, and technological adoption are key to sustaining SMCFs in Abuja. It therefore recommends that government and relevant stakeholders establish targeted funding programs, enhance capacitybuilding initiatives, and promote collaborative partnerships to strengthen the resilience and sustainability of SMCFs.
