BIOLOGICAL EVALUATION OF FORMULATED FEEDS USING MAGGOT AND MAIZE CHAFF AND GROWTH CURVE ACTIVITIES ON BROILER CHICKENS
Abstract
The possibility of using maggot and maize chaff as cheap raw materials for the formulation of broiler chicken feed and biological evaluation of the broiler chicken feed with both standard and formulated feed were investigated using the standard method described by AOAC (Association of Analytical Chemist, 2000). The results shows the proximate composition of standard and formulated broiler feeds, the result of the standard feed contain crude protein (7.7±0.16%), crude fibre (3.54±0.7%), fat (2.445±1.305%), ash (2.18±0.5%), moisture content (14.28±1.25%) and carbohydrate (69.86±1.25%), while that of formulated feed contain crude protein (10.72±0.08%), crude fibre (4.12±0.02%), ash (2.12±0.02%), moisture content (14.72±0.08%) and carbohydrate (65.6%±1.62). The analysis also shows the proximate composition of standard feaces and formulated feaces, the result of standards contain crude protein (4.97±0.02%), crude fibre (2.83±0.01%), fat (1.13±0.01%), ash (1.67±0.01%), moisture (15.71±0.01%) and carbohydrates (71.14±1.96%), while that of formulated contain crude protein (6.82±0.02%), crude fibre (3.615±0.045%), fat (2.13±0.01%), ash (2.17±0.01%), moisture contents (11.725±0.045) and carbohydrates (73.54±2.25%). The analysis also revealed the biological evaluation of the standard and formulated feed. The result shows that standard feed contain NPU (0.37), BV (36.79%) and PER (0.13), while the result of formulated contain NPU (0.37), BV (36.69%) and PER (0.13). The result of the growth rate of group I and group II shows the chickens fed to be 1.2 gram and 1.5 gram per day respectively. The formulated chicken feed is the feed that supported the growth of the chickens by 0.3 gram higher than that of the standard. However, the two of them are comparable. Therefore, the present study has shown that maggot and maize chaff can be used as alternative sources of food materials for the formulation of broiler chickens feed.
