GEOLOGY AND HYDROGEOLOGY OF UMUNYA, OGBUNIKE AND ITS ENVIRONS IN OYI LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, ANAMBRA STATE, NIGERIA.
Abstract
This study aims to investigate the geological framework of Umunya and Ogbunike in Oyi local government area, Anambra state, addressing the knowledge gap in hydrogeological, geotechnical, and environmental characterization. The study incorporates various geological and hydrogeological techniques, Integrated field observations, laboratory analysis (sieve analysis, grain size distribution), and Geochemical analysis were employed. The geological mapping results highlighted the dominance of sandstones, shales, and conglomerates of the Nanka Sandstone Formation. The particle size distribution analysis indicates that the soil is fine grained and poorly sorted which signifies storm deposits while the atterberg limit analysis indicates medium to high plasticity in the soil which signifies that it has moderate to high water absorption capacity and exhibits poor bearing capacity. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the geological framework of Umunya and Ogbunike, guiding sustainable groundwater resource management, infrastructure development, and environmental mitigation strategies, with variable grain size distribution, porosity, and permeability. Hydrogeological evaluation indicates moderate to high water table depths and aquifer transmissivity. Geotechnical assessments show moderate to high strength parameters. This study contributes to understanding the geological framework of Umunya and Ogbunike, informing sustainable groundwater resource management, infrastructure development, and environmental mitigation strategies.
