Abstract

A comprehensive geophysical survey was conducted to assess the groundwater potential of Abakpa, a densely populated region in Enugu State, Nigeria. The study employed vertical electrical sounding (VES) using the Schlumberger array to analyze subsurface characteristics, including resistivity variations and aquifer potentials. With a focus on sustainable groundwater exploration and management, the investigation mapped multiple geoelectric layers, including topsoil, silty clay, shale, sandstone, and siltstone. Aquiferous zones were identified primarily within the sandstone layers, showing high groundwater potential. These findings provide crucial data for future groundwater resource management, contributing to the environmental and economic well-being of local communities. Recommendations for well and borehole drilling target areas with thick sandstone formations to maximize water yield, while further hydrogeological studies and continuous monitoring of aquifers are suggested to ensure long-term sustainability. The study underscores the importance of integrating geophysical, geological, and hydrological data to build a comprehensive understanding of the groundwater system in Abakpa. This abstract highlights the key objectives, methodology, and findings, providing a concise overview of the geophysical survey's impact on groundwater exploration and resource management in the region.
