Abstract

ABSTRACT This study investigates the Effects of economic globalization on local industries in Anyigba, Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State. The main thrust of the research is to understand how globalization, through economic integration, technological advancement, and cultural exchange, has influenced the growth and sustainability of local industries in the area. Specifically, the study explores the influence of economic globalization on the growth of local industries, examines the role of technology transfer in shaping industrial development, evaluates the social challenges local industries face due to globalization, and identifies strategies for 7 mitigating these challenges. The research is anchored on Dependency theory. The study adopted a survey research design, with a total sample size of 400 respondents selected from different sectors of local industries and community stakeholders within Anyigba. Both questionnaire and interview methods were employed to generate primary data, while secondary data were sourced from relevant academic and institutional materials. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the data, and the findings were presented in tables, frequencies, and percentages. The findings revealed that globalization has both positive and negative effects on local industries. While it has encouraged competition, innovation, and access to broader markets, it has also exposed local industries to stiff competition from multinational corporations, leading to reduced patronage of local products. The study also found that technological transfer has facilitated productivity and skill acquisition but has simultaneously created dependency on foreign technologies. Furthermore, globalization has brought about social challenges such as loss of cultural identity, unemployment due to mechanization, and economic vulnerability of small-scale industries. However, strategies such as government support policies, capacity building, improved infrastructural development, and promotion of locally made products were identified as crucial in mitigating these challenges. The study concludes that globalization is a double-edged sword for local industries in Anyigba, offering both opportunities and threats. It recommends that local industries should embrace adaptive strategies, while government and stakeholders create enabling environments that balance global integration with local development
