EVALUATION OF VITAMIN CONTENTS OF SELECTED PARTS (LEAVES AND STEM BARK) OF ETHANOL EXTRACT OF ANTHIOCLESTIA DJALONESIS (CABBAGE TREE)

Abstract

ABSTRACT Using 100% ethanol as the solvent, this investigation was conducted to determine the amount of vitamins present in the leaves and stem bark of the cabbage tree, Anthocleista djalonensis A. Chev. The samples of Anthocleista djalonensis stem bark and leaves were gathered at the FWT farm at the Federal University of Technology in Owerri, Imo State. Within three weeks, it was carefully washed and dried by air. It was ground into a powder, very fine. The crude extraction method was used to obtain ethanol extract, which involved adding 1000 ml of ethanol to 300 g of Anthocleista djalonensis's leaves and stem bark, respectively. After the samples were digested and diluted, an ultraviolet and visible light spectrophotometer was used to analyze the chosen vitamins, namely vitamin A, vitamin B12, vitamin C, and vitamin E. The results show that the chosen vitamins have the following concentration values in the ethanol extract of the leaves and stem bark of Anthocleista djalonensis: vitamin A (Retinol), 9.456±0.0745mg/100g and 7.22±0.0000 mg/100g , vitamin B12 (Cyanocobalamin), 2.099±0.00155mcg/100g and 2.628±0.0491mcg/100g, vitamin C (Ascorbic acid), 82.46±0.6815mg/100g and 93.41±0.919mg/100g and vitamin E (Alpha tocopherol), 4.278±0.00154mg/100g and 0.364±0.012mg/100g respectively.
