DEVELOPMENT OF SIMPLE IMAGE STEGANOGRAPHY TOOL
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study investigates the development of a user-friendly image steganography tool using the Least Significant Bit (LSB) technique. The tool was designed to hide and retrieve text messages within digital images, prioritizing simplicity and usability for both technical and non-technical users. The system was implemented using Python and Tkinter, with a graphical interface that allows users to embed and extract messages without requiring technical knowledge. The tool's performance was evaluated based on image quality, message embedding capacity, and usability. The LSB technique was employed to embed encrypted messages into the least significant bits of pixel values in digital images. The tool's design ensures high imperceptibility, with a Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR) of over 40 dB, indicating minimal visual distortion. The tool's capacity to embed messages was also evaluated, with results showing that it can embed meaningful message sizes without compromising image quality. The study's results show that the tool maintains acceptable image quality while embedding meaningful message sizes. The user-friendly interface facilitates easy interaction, making it accessible to non-technical users. The tool's performance was tested with various image formats, including PNG, JPG, JPEG, and BMP, with PNG recommended for saving stego images to avoid lossy compression. The study concludes that the developed tool provides a practical solution for secure communication, education, and research. The tool's potential applications include confidential communication, watermarking, copyright protection, and covert data transfer. The study's findings have implications for future development of steganography applications, particularly in the areas of adaptive embedding and encryption. The tool's simplicity and usability make it an effective means of demonstrating steganography concepts, while its performance ensures reliable message embedding and extraction. Overall, this study demonstrates the effectiveness of LSB-based image steganography and highlights the potential of user-friendly tools in promoting secure communication and protecting sensitive information, with potential applications in various fields, including education, research, and industry, and contributing to the existing body of knowledge in steganography.
