EVALUATION OF LOW-COST SUSTAINABLE FISH FEEDS FORMULATED FROM AGRO-INDUSTRIAL BY-PRODUCTS ON THE GROWTH PERFORMANCE OF OREOCHROMIS NILOTICUS FINGERLINGS
Abstract
The feed formulation for fish is to ensure that its diets meet nutritional requirement during various stages of growth. In this study, fish feed was formulated using locally available ingredients; and the feed evaluated using Oreochromis niloticus fingerlings. Physical characteristics and proximate analysis content in the formulated feed were determined using standard procedure and methods. Data were analyzed using one way ANOVA. Technical analysis showed that feed consumption rate had a statistically significant influence on fish masses at 5% level of probability. The formulated feed gave the fish reasonable stable growth rate. Farmers should adopt the use of these agro-based feeds to reduce production costs and increase profitability in tilapia farming, especially in rural areas with abundant access to these materials. Further Research, Additional studies should be carried out to determine the digestibility, amino acid profile, and long-term effects of these feed formulations on fish reproduction, survival, and fillet quality.
