FEDERAL UNIVERSITY OTUOKE FACULTY OF SCIENCE A REPORT ON DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF PACKAGING MANAGEMENT SYSTEM FOR AN ECOMMERCE GROCERY STORE USING BEST FIT PACKING ALGORITHM. PRESENTED BY WARISO GODSWILL SILVER MATRICULATION NO: FUO/19/CSI/11878 SUB
Abstract
ABSTRACT
The exponential growth of e-commerce has exacerbated logistical challenges, particularly in packaging optimization. Conventional packing methods often lead to wasted space, unnecessary materials, and increased shipping costs, impacting both profitability and environmental sustainability. This research proposes a novel packaging management system for e-commerce stores leveraging the bin packing problem framework to address these inefficiencies. The system models package optimization as a bin packing problem instance, employing efficient algorithms to minimise packaging materials, reduce shipping costs, and improve customer experience. Integration with existing warehouse management systems further enhances operational efficiency. The project demonstrates the efficacy of the system through implementation and evaluation, achieving significant reductions in packaging waste and shipping costs while garnering positive customer feedback. This research contributes to the advancement of sustainable e-commerce practices and showcases the potential of the bin packing problem as a powerful tool for optimising logistical processes within the industry.
