Abstract

This study presents a survey of tick infestation and a parasitological assessment of tick-infested cattle at the mai-akuya cattle market. livestock production in nigeria, particularly cattle rearing, faces significant challenges from ectoparasites like ticks, which act as vectors for debilitating hemoparasites and cause direct physical damage, blood loss, and economic devaluation of livestock. using a descriptive cross-sectional design, tick specimens were collected from various anatomical sites of cattle brought to the market and morphologically identified. blood samples from the infested cattle were further subjected to parasitological examination to identify blood-borne parasites transmitted by these vectors. the findings provide crucial epidemiological data regarding the dominant tick species and associated parasitic burdens in cattle within this commercial hub, highlighting the urgent need for targeted acaricide treatments and improved veterinary surveillance to safeguard animal health and regional food security.
