THE INFLUENCE OF FAMILY STRUCTURE ON THE SOCIALIZATION OF CHILDREN: A NUCLEAR, EXTENDED AND SINGLE-PARENT FAMILY IN SOKOTO NORTH LGA.
Abstract
From time immemorial, the family has been the primary agent of socialization and remains fundamental to the development of every individual and society. The structure of the family greatly influences the values, attitudes, and behavior that children acquire as they grow. In Nigeria, and particularly in Sokoto North, families exist in various forms (nuclear, extended, and single-parent) each playing a distinctive role in shaping children’s social experiences. This study, therefore, examines the influence of family structure on the socialization of children in Sokoto North. The research was guided by Social Learning Theory and Attachment Theory, both of which emphasize the importance of parental modeling, emotional bonding, and consistent interaction in shaping a child’s social behavior. The study employed a descriptive survey design, and data were collected through questionnaires and interviews administered to children from different family types. Findings revealed that children from nuclear and extended families generally experience better emotional support and social adjustment compared to those from single-parent families, who often face challenges due to limited parental attention and economic constraints. The study concludes that effective socialization depends not merely on family structure, but on the quality of care, communication, and emotional stability provided within the home. It recommends that parents, communities, and policymakers work together to strengthen family systems and promote the healthy social development of children in Sokoto North.
