Abstract

ABSTRACT This study examines the role of public opinion in shaping government policy in Nigeria, with a specific focus on Isa Local Government Area of Sokoto State. The research investigates how the views, preferences, and reactions of citizens influence policy formulation and implementation at the local government level. Using a survey research design, data were collected from 150 respondents through questionnaires and supplemented with key informant interviews. The findings reveal that public opinion plays a significant role in shaping government policies in Isa Local Government, particularly through community meetings, media platforms, and public protests. However, the influence of public opinion is often limited by factors such as low political awareness, poor communication channels, and weak institutional mechanisms. The study concludes that effective citizen participation and responsive governance are essential for democratic development in Nigeria. It recommends improved public engagement strategies and better utilization of public opinion in the policy-making process. Keywords: Public opinion, Government policy, Policy making, Isa Local Government, Sokoto State, Nigeria.
